Internet judging and music

I mentioned it before, I spent a lot of time on the internet. I like browings on 9gag, tumblr or fmylife, and see the weird things that are on there. One of the things I keep noticing is the whole dilemma about music, which music is classified as ‘good’ and ‘cool’ music and which kind of music is ‘shit’. Of course this is completely personal, but on the websites I mentioned before, good music is mostly the Beatles, Guns ‘n Roses, Blink 182 or Elvis Presley.  The examples of ‘shit’ music are often Nicki Minaj or Justin Bieber.

Personally, I don’t really care about a person’s musical preferences. A friend of mine loves Eurovision festival songs, or songs in which they keep saying ‘bitch’. Not my style.

The thing is, most people that listen to Nicki Minaj or Justin Bieber are teens, who are rebelling against everything their parent do, say or like. So of course they’re listing to modern music, it’s what they know. Most teen who don’t are the “alternatives’ who don’t like to be mainsteam. The teens are completely convinced that their opinions (and taste in music) is the best, since they don’t know how to incorporate another opinion. This combined with the rebellion makes teens who tell everybody Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber are the best. Which annoys the young adults, who aren’t in puberty anymore and listen to older music they grew up with.

What happens next is quite funny. The young adults are posting on the internet how everybody should be unique and do what they want, e.g listen to the music they like. BUT, the moment they hear somebody listing to Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj or One Direction, they are uncultureled, stupid and deserve to die in hell. By which they are saying one thing, but doing another.

In my opinion, the young adults are just as bad as the teens, they just know how what people on the internet find cool. And to be part of the cool group, they make fun of the people who listen to different music. Whenever I see that, I can´t help but wonder who decides what is cool and good music? And who am I to judge the music taste of others? Just because I like one kind of music, does that mean another is bad?

(Eventhough I gave Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber as examples of ‘shit’ music, does not mean that they are shit. I just needed an example, and those are often used on the internet.)

(In case you were wondering, I like punk/rock music but I also enjoy Frank Turner, Beethoven or – very- occasionally One Direction.)
